Sunshine Daydream

We hear so often about sunlight being an amazing source of Vitamin D. We also hear about the sun harming our skin (we’ll discuss these soon). And so it’s all about finding that happy balance.

But have you ever noticed that your mood improves after being outdoors? Sillily I had never made the connection. Or maybe I did and I just forgot about it until my neurologist told me to go outside…

Anyway, sunlight hitting your retina triggers serotonin release in the brain, elevating mood. Serotonin can also help a person feel more calm and focused during the day.

What did I learn? It’s true. Even walking outside for 5 minutes helps relax my brain. My mood was boosted. I was able to focus and pre more present to have more meaningful discussions. As a person who notoriously hides from the sun, I now understand and appreciate what a short period sunlight can do for you. And absolutely with sunscreen, shirt, and a hat.

Get out of your windowless office and go outside. Open the shades in your house. Allow your eyes to take in the sunlight and experience where it takes your brain - perhaps you’ll meditate, focus on your breath, or even daydream. And if it was your windowless office you walked away from, I promise you’ll notice the difference in your mood when you return.

Let me know how it goes for you.
